Thiessen Law Firm is proud to announce Attorney Mark Thiessen’s recent achievement in becoming a Board Certified lawyer in criminal defense, named by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. This prestigious certification distinguishes only a select few attorneys as specialists in their respective fields, and requires a significant amount of legal skill.
The Texas Board of Legal Specialization was founded in 1974 by the Supreme Court of Texas, by the request of the State Bar of Texas. The State Bar wanted an organization that could certify legal specialists, so as to ensure that only the very best attorneys in each area of practice would receive the honorable distinction. As a result, the Texas Board of Legal Specialization is the only governing board throughout the state that has the authority to certify lawyers in specific legal specialties.
Lawyers who have been Board Certified in their legal fields are few and far between. There are more than 100,000 practicing attorneys in the state of Texas, and only about 7,400 are Board Certified by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. This distinction is especially notable among criminal defense attorneys. Of those who receive a Board Certification for criminal law, many are District Attorneys and very few use their legal knowledge to defend the accused.
In order to earn the title of Board Certified specialist in any given field, attorneys must go through an extensive application and certification process. First, applicants must qualify for the certification by having practiced law for at least 5 years, 3 years of which must have been spent working on their area of specialty. Applicants are then chosen based on their professional achievements and experience, which must be extensive and highly focused. The remaining attorneys are then permitted to take examinations for certification.
Once an attorney has passed his or her examination, that attorney can be referred to as a specialist in that area of the law. However, becoming a Board Certified criminal defense attorney is not a singular achievement. Board Certified lawyers must uphold their certification through extensive legal work in their chosen area of the law, which can include ongoing legal education.
